Varsity Devils fall to Trojans

The Mathews High School varsity baseball team had its home opener on Tuesday night, falling to the visiting Essex Trojans, 6-3.

Essex jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first inning, but the Devils bounced right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning.

Daniel Mitchem got two RBIs as Chris Davis and Josh Wilson scored off a bad throw and a balk. The Trojans came back to tie the game in the third inning and took the lead, 6-2, and kept it that way until the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Devils tried to come back with Austin Kemp getting on base after being hit by a pitch and stealing second base. Davis would come up to hit a double to score Kemp to narrow the margin.
