Varsity Devils drop two district games

The Mathews High School varsity boys’ basketball team dropped a pair of Tidewater District contests during the week, falling to Middlesex on Friday night, 66-44, and losing a close battle to King William on Tuesday, 62-60.

Middlesex controlled Friday’s game from the opening tipoff, as the Chargers came ready to play in front of their home crowd.

Deon Blake led Mathews in scoring with 19 points. Gio Aromin followed behind with 10 points. Cody Kelly had eight points while Deondre Foster contributed seven and Dayshon Williamson added two points.

On Tuesday night, Mathews hit the road again for another district contest against King William, knowing it needed a win to improve the chance for entering next week’s district tournament.
Throughout the game Mathews kept the score close with the Cavaliers. In the remaining seconds, the Blue Devils could only draw close as the Cavaliers held the lead by two and as the final buzzer blew the Devils had fallen, 62-60.
