Library of Virginia historian Eric Johnson will speak at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Middlesex County Historic Courthouse, Saluda, on the topic, “Voices of Revolution: Middlesex County in the Words of Its People.” Johnson will explore the question “what was life like in Middlesex during the Revolution,” through the voices of the people who lived through this transformative period. Residents’ concerns, experiences and narratives, all preserved at the Library of Virginia, will be illustrated. According to a release, he will share stories of Middlesex residents who argued for religious liberty, navigated the realities and complexities of enslavement, and even pushed back against efforts to move the county courthouse. Johnson is the coordinator of the VA250-funded Ideas in Action project at the Library of Virginia, an initiative that brings Revolutionary-era documents and the stories they tell back to the communities from which they came.
