Two weekend deaths were suspected drownings

The Gloucester County Sheriff’s Office responded to two suspected drownings over the July 4 holiday weekend.
On the afternoon of Friday, July 5, deputies were called to a suspected drowning at Warehouse Landing.

An investigation revealed occupants of a boat were swimming in the area of a sandbar and the current swept a child out into deeper water. An adult came to the aid of the child, but was also swept away by the current. Another boat observed the swimmers in distress and was able to pull them onto their vessel.

The adult swimmer was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead. The child was not physically injured. The deceased was identified as Hai Paul Tran of Raleigh, North Carolina. This case remains active pending results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the sheriff’s office said.

On the evening of Saturday, July 6, deputies were dispatched to the 3100 block of Pond Lane in reference to a suspected drowning. A 3-year-old child from Hampton had fallen into a swimming pool during a party. Individuals on scene, along with Gloucester Fire and Rescue, attempted lifesaving measures. The child was transported to the hospital and eventually flown to CHKD in Norfolk. On Sunday, July 7, the child died. This case remains active pending results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
