Two local educators receive financial literacy grants

Two local educators were awarded grants from the Hampton Roads Educators Credit Union.

Sally DiSpirito of Thomas Hunter Middle School in Mathews and Jackie Outten of Gloucester High School received two of the eight grants awarded to assist educators teaching financial literacy to elementary, middle and high school students.

The grants will help support current or new classroom projects that focus on financial literacy.

DiSpirito received $150 to purchase copies of “Invest with the Best: A Teenage Guide to Smart Investing.” She teaches personal finance at Thomas Hunter Middle School and wanted to give her students a deeper understanding of what the stock market is and how it works, a release stated.

Outten received $160 for the stock market game project. Students participate at stockmarketgame.org and are given $100,000 in virtual money to invest. The students research stocks, work as a team to make decisions, and gain experience in trading stock.
