Two horses perish in barn fire

Two horses perished in a barn fire late Monday evening on Friends Road in the Guinea area of Gloucester, according to Rob Parlett, public information officer with Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

AVFR was called to respond to the barn fire at around 9:25 Monday evening; initial reports indicated that the fire was fully involved and animals were still inside the structure.

Abingdon responded with four engines, one tanker, a rescue vehicle and one medic unit. Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue and the York County Department of Fire and Safety also responded with mutual aid; more than 40 firefighters were on the scene, Parlett said.

Though the fire completely destroyed the barn, no injuries were sustained by the owners or responders. Sadly, the two horses were unable to escape the barn and were lost.
