Two Gloucester residents die in separate accidents

Two Gloucester residents died in recent single-vehicle accidents in the county this past week.

On Monday at 11:12 p.m., a southbound 1998 Ford Explorer went off the right side of Route 17 in the vicinity of Rappahannock Concrete and struck a culvert, according to First Sergeant Kevin Barrick of the Area State Police Office. He said the vehicle overturned several times before landing in the median.

The passenger in the vehicle, Kathleen Diane Marie Echea, 23, of Gloucester, was ejected and her death was pronounced at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital. Barrick said the driver, William Hogg Wells, 22, of Gloucester, sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident. Wells was transported to RWRH before being transferred to Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News.

Barrick said the occupants were not wearing seatbelts and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash. He said Trooper J.A. Teagle investigated the accident and charges are pending.

Last Thursday, Shawn Lionel Foster, 26, of Gloucester, died at the scene of a single-vehicle accident on T.C. Walker Road. Barrick said Foster was driving a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup westbound when he hit some black ice and lost control just east of Route 17. He said the truck went off the right shoulder and struck several trees.

Barrick said Foster was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was not involved in the accident, which was investigated by Trooper L.J. Saunders. Barrick said three persons lost their lives on Gloucester roadways in January.

These were the second and third traffic fatalities in Gloucester County in 2011.
