Two GHS wrestlers win district titles

Two Gloucester High School wrestlers earned championship crowns in the Peninsula District tournament held Friday and Saturday at Phoebus High School.

Matt Favazzo won the 113-lb. weight class with pins in 4:41 and 5:43 and a decision. Ethan Newell took the 182 class with two pins in 1:20 and a decision.

Taking second place in their respective classes were Anthony Monahan at 120, Jordan Schaal at 132, Robert Leso at 160 and Devon Pullen at 170. Third-place finishes went to Isaac Chaney at 126, Levi Reeves at 195, Steven Zavatski at 220 and Jerry Woodlief at 285.

All 10 Dukes who placed in the top three of their classes will advance to the Eastern Region Tournament Friday and Saturday at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake.

 

The Hampton Crabbers took the district team title with 232.5 points in the tournament. Gloucester was second with 217 and Kecoughtan was third with 169.5.

The Dukes tuned up for their district match by grappling Poquoson on the Islanders’ mats on Jan. 29. Poquoson prevailed in the close contest, 37-30.

Getting pins for Gloucester were A.J. Ransom at 138 in 4:39, Zavatski at 220 in 40 seconds and Woodlief at 285 in 2:54. Favazzo at 113, Monahan at 120, Leso at 160 and Pullen at 170 won by decisions. The Dukes forfeited at 132, 145 and 152.
