Two die in Rt. 198 head-on collision

Two people died on Tuesday as the result of a head-on collision that occurred on Buckley Hall Road (Route 198) between Cobbs Creek and Dutton.

According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Jesse Dennis of Area 33 in Gloucester, the accident happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Route 198, around 500 feet east of Jenkins Neck Road, a private road near the intersection of Routes 198 and Windsor Road.

Dennis said that, according to the report, a 2014 Cadillac SUV driven by Odessa B. Rich of Folly Neck Road in Warsaw crossed the center line of the road and struck a 2006 Toyota SUV operated by Hardy L. Miller of the 1100 block of Cobbs Creek Lane in Cobbs Creek. The two were the only occupants of the vehicles, he said.

Both drivers were taken to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, said Dennis, and both died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
Dennis said it didn’t appear as though alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

These were the third and fourth traffic fatalities in Mathews in 2022.
