Tug Boaters and Pilots Day to be observed Sunday in Mathews

Sunday is Mathews County Tug Boaters and Pilots Day, as proclaimed by the Mathews Board of Supervisors. The Mathews Maritime Foundation will recognize all who have worked as pilots or on tugboats in the past and present, hosting a casual reception for them from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at its museum on Main Street. The public is invited.

A special exhibit will also be displayed, coinciding with the new calendar that debuted over Market Days, designed to educate everyone on how diverse the present-day tugboats are, the conditions under which they work, and the challenges that captains encounter on even the “normal” days.

The first 18-month calendar highlights some of the captains of Mathews, both working and retired, and shows several families of different generations.
