Trojans shut out Devils, 2-0

After a week off for spring break, the Mathews High School soccer program was scheduled to return to action yesterday with varsity and junior varsity home games against Rappahannock.

In the last game before the break, the varsity Devils lost a tough battle on April 1 to the home-standing Essex Trojans, 2-0. Essex scored both goals in the opening half.

The second half did go better, with no goals scored on Mathews thanks to Josh Foster and the rest of the Mathews defense. The varsity team seemed to be a little off during the second half, and maybe it was because of the two goals scored pretty quickly in the first half.

JV Devils

The JV team, meanwhile, rallied late in the game to tie the Essex Trojans, 3-3. Like their varsity counterparts, the Essex JV squad pulled ahead with two early goals. In the last five minutes of the second half, Mathews finally showed some life. Sawyer Hudson scored to give his teammates an extra burst of energy to achieve another goal by Allie Daniels. Then...
