Trojans defeat Lady Devils in softball

The Mathews High School varsity softball team fell to 4-2 on the season with a 4-2 loss on the road to the Essex Trojans last Thursday.

Madison Owens pitched the entire game for Mathews. She threw 86 pitches over six innings, 56 for strikes. She struck out two batters while allowing five hits, a walk, and three earned runs.

Offensively, MHS was led by Owens and Josey Bauby. Bauby was 1-for-2 with a double and a sacrifice; Owens was 1-for-2 with a single and a sacrifice. Bailey Kujawski and Casey Dalton were each 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI. Hunter Thomas and Taylor South each added a single.

Meanwhile, the junior varsity Lady Devils improved to 5-1 with a win at home last Thursday against the Essex Trojans. The Mathews girls crossed the plate nine times in the first inning and would go on to claim an easy 19-4 victory.
