Training session Tuesday for watermen’s heritage tours

A training session for Virginia Watermen’s Heritage Tours will be held from 5-8 p.m. this Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Mathews Community Foundation, 138 Main Street, Mathews. It is free of charge.

The program trains captains to set up their own independent heritage tourism businesses. Those who participate in the program demonstrate crabbing, oystering and fishing to residents and visitors, giving them an authentic taste of what it’s like to spend your life working on the water. The captains also relate personal stories, the history of the area, and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay.

Virginia Watermen’s Heritage Tours recently graduated six new captains from its heritage tourism training class, adding four boats to its program. The new captains are Charlie Haydon, Karen Moore, Billy Moore, John Satterly, Lisa Rose and Tony Ferguson.
