Traffic at a logjam

An overturned logging truck at the intersection of Routes 33 and 17 in northern Gloucester County last Wednesday afternoon resulted in a multi-vehicle pileup, snarling traffic for several hours, according to the Virginia State Police. VSP was dispatched to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. after receiving a report of a crash involving six vehicles at the intersection. The log truck was traveling southbound on Route 17 and attempted to turn westbound onto Route 33. The log truck, a 2002 Sterling tractor-trailer, then overturned, losing its load. The logs spilled into the eastbound lanes of Route 33, striking four vehicles that were stopped at the traffic light. One additional vehicle then struck a log in the roadway. The log truck driver, a 33-year-old man from Williamsburg, was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital with minor injuries. One additional driver was also transported to RWRH with minor injuries. Eastbound traffic was completely blocked for several hours and other traffic remained heavily congested around the site as well. Speed was a contributing factor, the VSP stated. The log truck driver was charged with reckless driving.
