Tourism official talks about ways Gloucester can market itself

Gloucester County represents “America’s story” and should position itself to showcase that, a state tourism official said during a July 19 meeting at Gloucester Point.

Staci Martin, development specialist for the Virginia Tourism Corporation, said that Williamsburg and Yorktown are telling other facets of this country’s history. Meanwhile, Gloucester has the opportunity to spotlight its watermen, farmers and merchants of years ago and today.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting at the York River Oyster Company, Gloucester Point, Martin said that instead of settling for some spillover business from tourists visiting Peninsula sites, Gloucester could be a destination of its own, where tourists come to explore this county and the rest of the historic Middle Peninsula.

Businesses can tie in to “the watermen’s story” that is a major part of the overall local economy, she said.
