TOGA event

The Tidewater Oyster Gardening Association will have an information tent set up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Deltaville Maritime Museum Market. Master Oyster Gardeners will provide free information on growing oysters and how they help improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Vendors will sell spat and floats. You can sign up for TOGAs 90-minute Oysters 101 course being held at 9:30 or 11 a.m. by emailing Seaglass Wines, a major supporter of TOGA, will sponsor a free wine-tasting at the TOGA tent. Each oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, removing sediment, nutrients, and algae from the water. By allowing more light to penetrate the water column, grasses grow which provide habitat for crabs, fish, and other marine life. Here, Master Oyster Gardeners Carl Zulick, at left, and Mike Ballato teach Middlesex County first graders at a field trip to the Deltaville Maritime Museum.
