Mathews County celebrated its bicentennial in 1991, and two years later, in June 1993, a time capsule containing newspaper articles, county budget, local bicentennial memorabilia, essays and more items from the year were placed in it, to be reopened May 1, 2041. Until then, the capsule was put aside for safe keeping at Mathews Memorial Library.
