Tigers beat Devils, 19-8

The Mathews High School varsity football team lost19-8 margin on Saturday afternoon to the previously winless King and Queen Tigers. The loss drops the Devils’ record to 0-6.

Jordan Bozza led MHS rushers with 50 yards on 15 carries. Cody Correll scored the only Mathews touchdown on a 2-yard run; Michael Cooke ran into the end zone for a two-point conversion.

Mason Kent was the Devils’ top receiver, making three catches for 45 yards. The starting defensive line kept pressure on the K&Q quarterback. Bill Riley had three sacks, Gus Bauby had two and Tyler Thompson and Isaiah Maultsby had one sack each. Mathews will hold its homecoming game on Friday. The celebration will begin with a parade at 4 p.m. leaving from Thomas Hunter Middle School and heading through the Court House toward MHS. That evening at 7 o’clock, the Devils will host the 4-2 King William Cavaliers. The homecoming queen and king will be crowned at halftime.
