Thrifty Spot to move to former YMCA building

The Thrifty Spot, a nonprofit thrift store operated by the special education department at Mathews High School, is getting ready to move from its current site in Hudgins to a new location.

Its future home will be the current Mathews Family YMCA in downtown Mathews. The Y is concurrently preparing to move into its brand-new quarters at Hudgins.

Friday will be the last day that The Thrifty Spot will be open at the current location, said special education teacher Stacie Martone. She said that the store will not be able to accept donations of goods until after the move is completed.

The new location has several advantages, said Martone. At 3,000 square feet, it’s much larger than the space the store currently occupies, so more students will be able to work there. In addition, there will be room for a sorting area for merchandise, a children’s section, and display space for crafts that the high school students make. The building is also handicapped-accessible, she said.
