Thrifty Spot celebrates 10-year anniversary

The Thrifty Spot in Mathews will celebrate its 10-year anniversary on Saturday.

Mathews special education teacher Stacie Martone took over as the Thrifty Spot’s coordinator four years ago when the store’s original coordinator Cathy Walker retired. After 10 years and two moves, Thrifty Spot has seen sustainable success to keep them going strong for the future.

The store’s current “spot” is in the former Mathews Family YMCA building near the Daily Grind Coffee House and M&M Building Supply.

“I feel like we could do 10 more years,” said Martone who said she is proud to be able to help impact and work with the community. Walker said that she feels like she’s left behind a legacy that’s still going strong.

This year was a challenge for the thrift store. COVID-19 caused its doors to stay closed from mid-March to late-May. Some of the staff have not been able to return due to health concerns, said Martone. She also said that they were not able to offer their yearly scholarshi...
