Three graduate from Mathews High in 1913

The commencement exercises of the Mathews High School were held in the Junior Order Hall on Tuesday night, a very large crowd being in attendance. The graduating class was composed of Misses Josephine Marchant and Juliette Mayo and Mr. Edward Fox. Miss Mayo delivered the salutatory address and Miss Marchant was the class historian. Both were excellent and received great applause from the audience. Mr. Fox, as valedictorian, delivered an impressive address appropriate to the occasion. The diplomas were presented by Rev. N.B. Foushee in a graceful manner.

Miss Ruby May Deal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.L. Deal, of Naxera, expects to sail August 1 for China, where she is being sent by the First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk in medical missionary work. Miss Deal, who is a graduate of St. Vincent’s Hospital, will have charge of a hospital in Peking.
