Thousands flock to Gwynn’s Island for down-home festival

With near-perfect weather, Saturday’s Gwynn’s Island Festival attracted thousands of festival-goers who came to enjoy the music, food, crafts and small-town ambiance that this annual celebration has to offer.

“Everything went very well,” said organizer Cricket Call, who joked that there were so many cars parked in the field next to the Gwynn’s Island Civic Center that “I thought the island was going to tip over.”

“The music was grand … I was so excited about it,” she said. “It was glorious.”

Jan Bassett was in charge of this year’s “World Famous” Chicken Dinner that kicks off the festival on Friday night and it sold out. Bassett headed up the Gwynn’s Island booth, selling T-shirts and programs. “She’s been a great help all along,” Call said of Bassett. “I couldn’t do it without her.”

Bassett also coordinated this year’s arts and crafts vendors. ...
