Thompson places second in Ram Rumble

Mathews High School wrestlers competed with more than 25 teams from across Virginia and North Carolina on Friday and Saturday at Lafayette High School in the Ram Rumble.

Mathews finished in a tie for 20th place with 71 points. First Colonial (257 points), Kellam (221 points) and Princess Anne (158 points) placed first, second and third overall.

Parker Thompson placed highest among Mathews wrestlers, scoring three pins and a decision to place second in the 138-pound class. He lost a 4-3 decision to Kellam’s Enzo Irizarry in the championship bout. Joseph Hall, wrestling at 182 lbs., went 3-2 to place sixth, while Mason Fiscella (170 lbs.) went 3-2 with all his victories coming from pins to place seventh.

Last Thursday, Mathews defeated Essex and King and Queen by scores of 54-16 and 34-6, respectively, in a home meet.

On Saturday, Mathews hosts teams from Bruton, Cape Henry Collegiate, Franklin, Lancaster, Northampton, Northumberland and Washington and Lee, beginning at 9 a.m....
