Thompson allowed to return as wrestling assistant coach

Jami Thompson will be allowed to serve as a volunteer wrestling coach at Mathews High School after all.

At the Oct. 21 Mathews County School Board meeting, a large number of students and parents showed up in a show of support for Thompson, who was asked not to return to assist the wrestling program this winter.

Following that meeting, new head coach Frank Taylor, along with MHS principal Albert Green and athletic director Derek Kibler, discussed the matter and decided to allow Thompson’s return as a volunteer assistant.

“Seeing how invested the kids were in the process, we felt like it was the best thing for the program” to allow Thompson’s return, Green said. Thompson brings with him an enthusiasm for the sport and can serve as a liaison between the MHS program and youth wrestling, the principal added. ...
