THOMAS ‘TOM’ W. SAWYER

Thomas “Tom” W. Sawyer, 70, of Hayes, passed away Sept. 14, 2017.

Tom was born in Newport News to Dorothy (Stant) and Corbett Sawyer. He graduated from Kecoughtan High School and received his degree from St. Leo College.

Tom worked in government purchasing for over 50 years, starting in the cities of Hampton and Newport News; and serving as York County purchasing agent for the last 33 years. During his career, he was awarded the CPPO, CPBE Lifetime Certificates in 2009.

Although his professional accomplishments, public service and awards were important to him, his greatest joy has always been his loving family. He was the ultimate “soccer dad/granddad,” spending much of the last 28 years at their sporting events. He was a lover of the arts, travel, good food and wine.

Our “Superman” will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Dawne; his children, Kristin (Jason) Poulin, Deniece (Joe) Byrne, Aaron (Missy) Cothern, Meghan (Phil) Patterson, Cynthia Rhoades (Mike Clark), Johnny (Joyce) Light, Angie Light and Kevin Light; his cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Matthew, Joey, Patrick, Rylie, Kaelyn, Harper, Sabastian, Stacey and Robert; sister, Marsha (David) Trottier; brother, Corbett, and countless family and friends.

A celebration of life was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, at Bethany U.M. Church, followed by a visitation until 5 o’clock. Inurnment was private.

The family desires memorial contributions be given to Johns Hopkins University, Ralph H. Hruban, M.D., 600 N. Wolfe Street, Carnegie 417, Baltimore, Maryland 21287, or Bethany U.M. Church, P.O. Box 527, Gloucester Point, Virginia 23062.
