THOMAS ALBERT JOHNSON

Thomas Albert Johnson, 68, of Hayes, died Feb. 2, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Tom retired from Verizon in 2015 after nearly 40 years with the company as it transitioned from Contel to GTE and later to Verizon. His role with the company plateaued as an Engineering Supervisor where he was responsible for designing and implementing the telecommunications infrastructure for the entire state of Virginia.

In 1999, after Hurricane Floyd flooded the City of Franklin, Tom was in charge of rebuilding the entire telecommunications network from scratch for which he received a Presidential Award of Merit.

He was a very simple, humble and kind man. He enjoyed gardening, grilling, watching sports and trips to the Outer Banks. He truly loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He left a lasting impression of genuine kindness in everyone he met. He spent his entire life making sure that those he encountered would know that the good in the world always overpowered the bad.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John A. and Page M. Johnson, and his son-in-law, Virginia State Trooper Chad P. Dermyer.

He is survived by his daughters, Kristine Gilliam (Marjorie Masco) and Michelle Dermyer; son, Eric Johnson (Cassie); grandchildren, Phillip Dermyer, Page Dermyer, Candace Johnson and Katelynn Johnson; sisters, Nancy St. Clair, Carolyn Spalding and Patricia Suttle.

The family will receive friends 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Services will be private.

The family would like to thank the nurses and aides with Riverside Walter Reed Hospice for their wonderful care of our loved one.

In Tom’s memory, the family asks that contributions may be given to the Gloucester Youth Football Association, P.O. Box 328, Gloucester, Va. 23061.
