THMS to hold BBQ fundraising dinner for historical marker

A fundraiser to help pay for a historical marker to celebrate Thomas Hunter Middle School’s past as a Rosenwald school will be held next week.

A barbecue dinner will be served from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 25, at the school. The dinner will include pulled pork with baked beans, cole slaw, beverage and dessert. The cost is $10 and dine-in and carry-out are available.

The evening’s entertainment includes the following: 5:30 p.m., Gabby Lewis, Emily Lewis and Joice Small; 6, Lynda Smith; 6:30, Caleb Burford and Ashley Cummings; and, at 7, the Thomas Hunter Middle School Band Ensemble.

A committee headed up by parent and community member Katherine Davis Small and assistant principal Amy Hauser is in the process of applying for a historical marker from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

DHR requires that a sponsor pay for the manufacture (and possibly the installation) of the marker. The cost of manufacture is slightly under $2,000 at present.
