THMS Spelling Bee

Thomas Hunter Middle School sixth grader Charlotte Bailey, third from left, was the winner last Thursday in the school-level qualifying round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee’s Local Bee, to be held at WHRO in Norfolk on March 31, 2022. She won a $25 gift card donated by Howard Dooley Café and will advance to the Local Bee. Thirty students in grades five through eight participated, with seventh grader Adam Greve, at left, coming in second and sixth grader Corey Zheng, second from left, taking third. They each won a gift card to Salty Dog Pizzeria. Every participant in the bee received a free book, donated by Michael Cannon, along with a $10 gift certificate to the Friends of the Mathews Memorial Library book store, donated by Eric Engler. Judges were Engler, Christine Bridge, and Michele Baker. The winners are shown with sixth grade teacher Leslie Hudgins, who organized and hosted the bee.
