THMS fifth graders receive surprise gift

The fifth grade students at Thomas Hunter Middle School, Mathews, received a special surprise from their teachers last Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Between the hours of 8-11 a.m. and 2-4 p.m., fifth graders stopped by to pick up a gift bag from their teachers which included a candy cane, a hot cocoa packet, juice, goldfish, sour straws, chocolate candy, Swedish fish and a copy of the book, “Dear Mr. Henshaw,” written by Beverly Cleary.

The book gift was made possible through an award that fifth grade language arts teacher Tracy Whitehurst received. The $500 award came from WAVY Channel 10 Operation School Supplies, in partnership with United Way. Whitehurst was nominated for the award by the Mathews County Public Schools administration office.

Whitehurst used 100 percent of the funds to support any educational or student support materials that she saw fit. She chose to use the money to purchase a copy of “Dear Mr. Henshaw” for each fifth grade stud...
