THELMA W. SMITH

Thelma W. Smith departed this life, to be with the Lord and Savior, on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at Atlantic City Regional Medical Center in New Jersey.

She was born March 16, 1927 to the union of the late Dorothy Viola Ruff and John Roger Williams of Mathews. She was baptized at Wayland Baptist Church at an early age. She graduated from Dallas Beauty College in Dallas, Texas, and worked as a beautician. She also went on to work at H. Warshow and Son Inc. in Tappahannock. Then, she went on to work at Eastern State Hospital until she retired.

She moved to Colorado with her son, Deacon Keefe Smith, for 15 years. There, she was active in the Senior Ministry and Mother’s Board at True Spirit Baptist Church in Colorado. Later, she moved to Hammonton, New Jersey, with her son, Howard Jr., until her death.

Preceding her in death were her father, John Roger Williams; mother, Dorothy Viola Williams, and two sisters, Nina Hall and Elsie Mae Peterson.

She leaves to mourn her and celebrate her life her three sons, William H. Smith Jr. (Dominica) of Hammonton, Jerome C. Smith (Arlean) of Gloucester, and Deacon Keefe M. Smith (Terri) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 10 grandchildren, Tanya, Howard Laqua, Jerome Jr., Jonathan, Blair, Dante, Mikayla, Marcus, Kiara and Crystal; sister-in-law, Nina (Tinsley) Smith; five great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. 

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at the Wayland Baptist Church, Mathews; interment in Windsor Gardens, Dutton. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Friday at the J.K. Redmond Funeral Home, Shacklefords.
