THELMA ELAINE WEST JOHNSON

Thelma Elaine West Johnson was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on Dec. 14, 1926, to the late Samuel and Susie West. She went home to be with the Lord on March 8, 2018 at Flushing Hospital in Queens, New York.

Elaine spent her early years in Norfolk, then her family moved to Gloucester, Virginia, in the early 1930s. She graduated from Gloucester Training School in Gloucester in 1943. She became a member of Gleaning Baptist Church in Gloucester at an early age.

She married Marshall Johnson on Feb. 3, 1947, and they migrated to New York.

Elaine began her career with the United States Postal Service in New York in 1968 that spanned 41 years.

She was a member of “The Blessed 13” of Gloucester Training School, and the Elmcor Senior Citizen Center in New York.

Elaine was predeceased by her granddaughter, Kimberlee Clarice Lewis.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving daughter, Cheryl Johnson of East Elmhurst, New York; sister, Ophelia Pollard of Gloucester; sisters-in-law, Ruth Palmer of East Elmhurst, and Sadie Cooke (Wythe) of Gloucester, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Celebration of her Life will be held at Gleaning Baptist Church on Monday, March 19, 2018. Viewing will be from 10-11 a.m. The service will begin at 11 o’clock. Interment will be at Bethel Baptist Church immediately following the service.
