The school year gets underway in Mathews

Gwynn’s Island School will open this week. We are glad to have Miss Addie Pugh as teacher with us again.

Miss Eva Wright of Caroline County arrived last week to take charge of Clifton School at Hudgins, which opened Monday last.

The new public school at Cardinal is nearing completion and we hope to see it in successful operation in the course of one or two weeks.

Hallieford School opened Oct. 5 with Miss Mary Fox of Fitchetts as teacher.

100 YEARS AGO

The Spanish influenza has found its way into all parts of Mathews, counting 500+ cases here, and with telling effects upon its victims. A number of deaths have resulted from this disease and a large number of new cases are being reported each day.

Several of the doctors here are confined to their beds with influenza which adds to the seriousness of conditions in Mathews.

All of the public schools have been close...
