The days of voles and roses

On March 8, a fellow Master Gardener, Beve Hermanson, posted a photo on Facebook of a large rose bush lying on its side in a wheelbarrow with its network of roots sadly shorn away. Beve had commented, “Third rose bush in a week! Grrrrr…I hate voles!!! Several friends had commiserated with Beve’s frustration, but one comment by mutual friend Lynne Manning caught my attention, “Beve, cut it back and replant in the ground or a pot. It will come back. That’s happened to me; my rose bush came back stronger than ever!!!” I decided to research the possibility of rejuvenating new roots on a damaged rose bush before I commented, but I wasn’t confident that I would find any scientific evidence to back up the idea.
