Tests conducted at Coleman Bridge

Multiple openings for routine maintenance operations were held at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge on Jan. 18.

Crews conducting tests found everything was in satisfactory condition and "there were no issues," said Brooke Grow, a Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman.

Technicians took engineering measurements of the electric motors and inspected the hydraulic span drive equipment, Grow said. Motorists experienced several delays of 15-20 minutes both in the late morning and early afternoon. Off-peak travel times were selected for the openings, Grow said. Maritime traffic was not affected during the maintenance activities.

No major repairs are scheduled at the Coleman at this time, Grow said, but VDOT has an ongoing maintenance program in place for the heavily-traveled bridge, which carries Route 17 over the York River between Gloucester Point and Yorktown.
