Temporary traffic stops held on Coleman for maintenance work

Two traffic stops of up to 30 minutes each were required Sunday at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge. Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson Jennifer Gwaltney said the traffic stops were held in conjunction with single-lane northbound closures on the span from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day.

The single-lane closures were necessary, Gwaltney said Tuesday, to allow crews to perform electrical and mechanical work to the bridge. The span remained fully operational throughout the work, she said, but the traffic stops were required so that crews could reposition equipment. Maritime traffic was also impacted by the bridge work.

Several other temporary closures of the span will be scheduled during the next few months to allow completion of repairs to the swing span mechanism. Crews try to schedule multiple traffic stops at the Coleman on Sunday mornings when traffic counts are often lower.
