TEENIE EDWARDS

Teenie Edwards, 93 years old, passed away on July 8, 2014.

She was the widow of Charles E. Edwards. She was born Ella Wanda Godsey on Sept. 27, 1920 and was the youngest of 13 children born to James Walter Godsey and Ida Respess. Her father gave all his children nicknames and she was called Teenie because she was the youngest and she was so small when she was born.

She was born and raised on Gwynn’s Island and a lifelong member of Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church. She was proud of being a Gwynn’s Island native and very knowledgeable about local history. Her memories about her father’s buyboat named “The Wanda” are recorded in the book “Chesapeake Bay Buyboats” by Larry Chowning. She was a volunteer for many years with the Gwynn’s Island Museum. She was a member of the Cricket Hill chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former chapter regent. She was also a longtime member of the Eastern Star.

Teenie is survived by her daughter, Joy Edwards Zeh; son-in-law, Ted Zeh; granddaughters, Kathryn Zeh and Suzanne Gallagher and Suzanne’s husband Corey, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.

The family would like to express their grateful appreciation for the dedicated and compassionate care of the staff at Riverside Convalescent Center-Mathews.

Donations in Teenie’s memory can be sent to the Gwynn’s Island Museum, Gwynn Va. 23066, Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church, P.O. Box 26, Gwynn Va. 23066, or Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 723, Mathews Va. 23109.

The family will greet visitors Sunday, July 13 from 5-7 p.m. at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. The funeral service will be held Monday, July 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, followed by a graveside service at Gwynn’s Island Cemetery.
