Tax-Free Weekend to be held this weekend

In preparation for the start of the school year, and to help residents with hurricane and emergency preparedness, Virginia will hold its Tax-Free Weekend Friday through Sunday. From 12:01 a.m. Friday through Sunday at 11:59 p.m., people can purchase a number of eligible items without paying the 5.3 percent state sales tax. School supplies, clothing and footwear will be exempt from state taxation, including $20 or less per item on qualified school supplies and $100 or less on qualified clothing and footwear. Eligible hurricane and emergency preparedness products include portable generators ($1,000 or less per item), gas-powered chainsaws ($350 or less per item), chainsaw accessories ($60 or less per item) and other specified hurricane preparedness items ($60 or less per item).
