Tappahannock was one of four communities to join the Virginia Main Street program, Gov. Ralph Northam announced last week. With the addition of Tappahannock, Cape Charles, Onancock and Tazewell, there are now 30 designated Main Street communities in the state, including Gloucester. Mathews is one of 80+ Virginia Main Street affiliates.
Tappahannock, located in Essex County, and the other newly designated communities completed a competitive application process and will receive intensive services to help strengthen their downtowns, administered by the state Department of Housing and Community Development, a release stated.
These include market analysis, marketplace development, capacity building, design assistance, organization development, economic strategies, and façade renderings for redevelopment projects.
