120 YEARS AGOThursday, Feb. 1, 1906from the Mathews Journal Miss Lena Fary of Gloucester spent last week at the home of Mrs. Eva Simmons. Mrs. Simmons had a social gathering in honor of Miss Fary and her sister Miss Lula Richardson on last Monday evening. We enjoyed pulling taffy, and perhaps some was given that had not been cooked. Music was furnished by Miss Cora on the organ. It is hoped that Miss Fary will visit Mathews again in the near future. A large number of “Commercial Angels” (drummers) have visited our town recently. 110 YEARS AGOThursday, Feb. 3, 1916from the Mathews Journal Mr. George L. Diggs of Laban, has invented a collapsible barrel which can be handled very easily in its collapsed condition and yet set up ready for use in a few minutes.
