SYLVIA DEAL BATTISTO

Sylvia Deal Battisto, 85, of Achilles, passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2016.

Sylvia was born on Dec.  24, 1930 in the heart of Guinea. She graduated from Achilles High School and then went on to work at the Newport News Shipyard as secretary to the Vice President. Soon after, she met the love of her life, Vincent Battisto, whom she married in 1953.

She was known by everyone for her smile as a cashier at the local grocers for many years.

She is survived by her daughter Debby and husband Jim Lockwood; her son, Vincent Battisto Jr.; grandchildren, Rose Battisto, Lee Lockwood and wife Elishia, Amy Hall and husband James Lee, and John Walker; sister, Sophia Hogge and husband Jennings; a special niece, Kay Hogge, and grand-nephew, Ray Hogge; great-grandchildren, Paris Lockwood, Breydan Stroberski, Dustyn Hall, Zachary Hall, and Arabella Hall.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl Jenkins Deal; father, Braxton Deal, and her husband of 60 years, Vincent Battisto Sr. 

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Haggerty for his compassion and care and the special nurses at Riverside Walter Reed. Also to Janice Eller who has been by her side faithfully as a caregiver.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, from 6-7:30 p.m. Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at 3 p.m. in Union Baptist Church. Burial was in Rosewell Memorial Garden.

Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory, Gloucester, Va., was in charge of arrangements.
