Swearing-in ceremony

Dr. Mari Ann Gibbs, who was elected in November to the Mathews County School Board, was officially sworn in during a ceremony Monday morning in Mathews Circuit Court. Clerk of Courts Angie Ingram, at left, performed the ceremony. A large crowd of Gibbs’s supporters filled the jury box in the courtroom; school board member Bobby Dobson was also in attendance. Gibbs won the special election to serve the remaining year of the term held by Jeanice Sadler, who moved out of the community. Gibbs received approximately 60 percent of the vote, defeating Lorraine Forrest, who had been appointed on an interim basis after Sadler announced in October 2021 that she would be stepping down from the board. That seat will be up for election next November, along with the seats currently held by school board chairman Desmond Smith and vice chair John Priest.
