Suzie Q’s Barber Shop opens in Hayes

Sylvia Stroud of Gloucester opened Suzie Q’s Barber Shop on Route 17 at Longview Drive in Hayes on June 30.

Stroud operates the single chair shop, named for her nickname while growing up, full time. She works alone. She offers traditional barber services, including “clipper over comb, a hot towel, warm lather and a straight razor (shave).”

Although Stroud expects most of her clients will be men and boys, she is happy to provide cuts for women who are seeking barber services. Stroud said she’s a barber—not a cosmetologist—and does not offer salon services such as hair color. “I love the people,” Stroud said of offering hair cuts and shaves to clients. Stroud has seven years’ barber experience. She apprenticed under her late husband, Mike Stroud, at the former Rilee’s Barber Shop in Gloucester. In 2009, Stroud was a recipient of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry’s Outstanding Apprentice Award.
