Suspicious package found at Mathews P.O.

A suspicious package found early Tuesday evening at the Mathews Post Office was eventually determined not to be dangerous, according to Capt. Sid Foster of the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office.

Postal employees found the suspicious package in the blue drop box outside the post office at around 5 p.m., Foster said. They alerted the sheriff’s office because the white package, which was about six inches long and a couple inches deep, did not have either a shipping or a return address.

The sheriff’s office arrived, immediately evacuated the area and called for assistance from the Virginia State Police bomb detection unit in Chesapeake. Representatives from the United States Postal Inspection Service were also called to the scene.

"We did this because of safety," Foster said. "Everybody worked together and finally we got it resolved where it was no danger to the community."
