Suspicious death in Mathews being investigated

The Mathews County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in its investigation of a death that occurred at North on Sunday which the office termed “suspicious.”

Major John Williams said that a Gloucester resident reported his 41-year-old wife missing at around 1:45 p.m. Sunday. He told the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office that she was depressed and had been gone approximately two hours. Williams would not identify the woman or her husband.

During the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office investigation, deputies contacted the Mathews Sheriff’s Office and provided two possible locations in Mathews where the husband had said his wife might be found, both of which were properties owned by the couple.

A search ensued, and the woman’s vehicle was found at around 4:45 p.m. in the 4400 block of North River Road, between the intersection with John Clayton Memorial Highway and Marina Road. Williams said the car was parked close to the road in a driveway...
