SUSIE MAE YOUNG

Susie Mae Young was born Oct. 11, 1934 in Cash, Gloucester County, Va. She transitioned from time into eternity on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at the Dockside Health and Rehabilitation Center in Locust Hill, Va.

She was the daughter of the late Betty Louise Prosser Young and James Eddie Young.

In her early years, Susie was baptized and became a member of the New Mount Zion Baptist Church, Woods Cross Roads. Through the years, she participated with the usher board, senior choir, gospel chorus and several committees. She had served as a trustee and the church clerk. She, along with her sister and other relatives and friends, worked tirelessly as the 601 Club, an auxiliary that held fundraisers for the church.

Susie was a member of the 1954 class of Gloucester Training School. After graduating, she cancelled her plans to move to New York, to help her father on the farm. After his passing, she became employed with H. Warshow & Son, Inc., an elastic company in Tappahannock, Va. In 1973, she became an employee of Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Va. She retired from there in 1996 after 23 years.

In the early ’70s, Susie met the late James Kenneth Redmond. They enjoyed, encouraged and supported each other until his death in 1992. Mr. Redmond was the manager of Oliver’s Restaurant in Jamaica, Va., and the owner of J.K. Redmond Funeral Home in Shacklefords, Va., and Susie never hesitated to assist him with both endeavors. After his death, she dutifully stood by their daughter in continuing the responsibilities of the funeral home until a car accident in 2009 forced her to retire.

Susie was an inspiration to all who knew her because she never let a childhood disability slow her down. She selflessly made herself available to those in need, often without any recognition or benefit to herself.

She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as three brothers, Robert Young, James Baylor Young and David Young; her sister, Cora Alice Young, and her love, J.K. Redmond, and many other relatives and friends.

Those Susie leaves to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kimberly Redmond-Cosby and her husband Shawn; two nephews, Steven Young and her wife Sherry and Kevin Young and his wife Sonia; five first cousins, John Prosser Jr., Theresa Prosser Wright, Peggy Young Small, Nathan Young and James Thomas Young, and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the J.K. Redmond Funeral Home. The interment will be in the New Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The viewing will be 12 p.m.-8 p.m. Friday and 12 p.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
