SUSIE E. SHELTON

Susie E. Shelton, 98, a resident of Mathews, Virginia, since 1978, was called home on Aug. 8, 2021 to be reunited with her husband, Preston F. Shelton Jr.

Celebrating her life well-lived, with a deep faith and no regrets, are her two daughters and her son, and all of their family members.

Susie will be reunited with her predeceased granddaughter, Jennifer Stoudt; son-in-law, William Stoudt; her three sisters, Dorothy, Margurite and Annie and their husbands.

Susie began her life in Essex County, Virginia, near Miller’s Tavern at North Bend. In 1925, the family moved to Richmond on W. Franklin Street where they all stayed through the war until 1947. All four girls were married by then and starting families of their own. Pres and Susie left Richmond in 1948 for Charlotte, N.C., where they had their son in 1950. From Charlotte, they moved to Stratford, N.J., where they stayed until 1978 when Preston retired and came to their “Little Piece of Heaven” in Mathews to this day. During her long life, Susie’s hands were ever busy doing whatever would benefit her family or her church. Wherever she lived, she successfully made the house a home filled with harmony and love. Family and faith were paramount in Susie’s life and could be caught singing the hymn “In the Garden,” her favorite. She will be truly missed and loved always.

The family will have a private service. Susie’s family would like to thank all the staff and residents of Riverside Convalescent Center-Mathews for the great care, attention and kindness these past two and a half years. In lieu of flowers, her life is best celebrated with contributions in her name to her great-grandfather’s church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 278, Miller’s Tavern, Va. 23115. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, is assisting the family.
