Support for music departments

The Gwynn’s Island Civic League recently made donations to the music departments at Thomas Hunter Middle School and Mathews High School. Above, former THMS music director Michael Loveless, at left, accepts a $2,050 donation from Gwynn’s Island Civic League Foundation chairman John Mathiesen on July 25. The funds came from a Dine to Donate fundraiser at Southwind Café in early June, with a portion of the day’s sales earmarked for THMS music. The foundation and community partners C&F Bank, Next Home Realty/Charlene Winter, and Noble Pest Control added funds, as well. Below, MHS music director Mark Givens, center, accepts a $1,000 donation from foundation members Dan Hill, left, and Bill Burdette. The donation was given by the GICL for the music department’s assistance with the Lord Dunmore skit performed by the Court House Players at the Gwynn’s Island Festival in June. Mark Givens and his students composed and performed the “Gwynn’s Island Lord Dunmore March,” after which Lord Dunmore was marched to the dunk tank. The skit represented the Revolutionary War battle at which Dunmore was defeated. Music was performed by Zoe Camp on fife and Hayden Owens on drums.
