Supervisors turn down resolution opposing early voting

By a 3-2 margin last Thursday afternoon, the Mathews County Board of Supervisors voted against adopting a proposed resolution that would have opposed early voting in the upcoming statewide election on Congressional redistricting. The resolution, which was introduced by supervisor Tim Doss, called into question the timing of the vote, especially early voting on the measure, which is set to begin tomorrow. The point of contention, which is being considered in the courts, is that the Constitution of Virginia requires a 90-day period after action is taken in the General Assembly before a proposed amendment can be placed before voters. House Joint Resolution 4, setting up this vote, was approved on Jan. 16. The county resolution objected to early voting beginning before April 16 (90 days after the enabling legislation).
