Supervisors to hold hearing Monday on helipad request

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Monday night on a request to construct a helipad on Gwynn’s Island. The meeting will begin at 6 o’clock in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School.Usually held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, the date of the May meeting was changed to accommodate schedule conflicts.

Construction of the 20’ x 20’ helipad and an associated 20’ x 65’ garage has been requested by William H. Shewmake on behalf of the Mark T. Motley Trust. It would be located on 3.49 acres on Old Farm Road, which is a 15-foot-wide, private right-of-way shared by about a dozen waterfront property owners. The county has received numerous letters of opposition to the project. On Tuesday night, the Mathews County Planning Commission voted to recommend that the board deny the conditional use permit request.
