Supervisors deny request for golf carts on Gwynn’s Island

The Mathews County Board of Supervisors, at its Sept. 23 meeting, voted unanimously not to support a request to allow golf carts on Gwynn’s Island’s public roads.

Residents of Gwynn’s Island attended the board meeting to express opposition to the request, which was made last month by the Gwynn’s Island Civic League. Island resident Tyrone Hudgins presented a letter to the board objecting to the request, which would reduce the speed limit on many of the island’s roads to 25 mph and would allow drivers over the age of 16 to drive on them.

Hudgins explained that, although the petition the league turned in to the board had 319 signatures, some of the people who signed it had not been aware that such an ordinance would require a reduction in the speed limit.
